Population change has two components, 1) “natural increase/decrease” resulting from the difference between numbers of persons born and number of persons who died in a given period of time, and 2) migration of persons into and out of an area. Hancock County has seen very modest change in population due to differences in births and deaths. Between 1990 and 1996 the increase in population attributable to natural increase is just 152 persons. In 1995 Hancock County recorded 478 births and 533 deaths, for a loss of 55 persons. Bucksport has experienced similar small changes in population. Bucksport’s population rose from 4,825 in 1990 to 5,065 in 1996, with an estimated natural increase of 83 persons and increase of 157 persons due to migration. Between 7/1/97 to 6/30/98 Bucksport recorded 45 deaths and 47 births, a natural increase of just 2 persons.
