Notes:
Health care providers maintain some records on services dispensed, often categorized by “Diagnostic Related Group” or DRG. One provider, the Bucksport Regional Health Center has provided recent data on major diagnoses for one year. Ear infections are the most common reason for a visit, followed by several other ear, nose and throat problems. This pattern appears quite pronounced for Bucksport, though there are several possible explanations. One explanation is that this health center is positioned well for these health problems, drawing a large share of a normal-sized market. Health clinics typically cannot provide advanced care or emergency services, eliminating several diagnostic groups. On the other hand, they tend to be cost competitive for outpatient ear-nose and throat problems.
Another explanation is that ear, nose and throat problems are greater in Bucksport than in other communities. These problems are often related to environmental factors, such as indoor and outdoor pollution, and exposure to infected persons in crowded or poorly ventilated areas. Individual factors that can influence these infections include smoking or exposure to second-hand smoke, diet, other health problems and frequent contact with others who are infected.
