"Keeping Kids On Track"

The Ellsworth Area Communities for Children invites students ages 10-14 attending school in Ellsworth and School Union 92 to join our Keeping Kids on Track committee for their next planning meeting on November 6, 2002. This meeting will be held at 5pm, at the Downeast Health Services Conference Room #1, 52 Christian Ridge Road, Ellsworth. Keeping Kids on Track is a program of the United Way of Eastern Maine. Charged with supporting local efforts that respond to the needs of adolescents aged ten to fourteen, this committee will have the opportunity to award over $2000 to community groups whose purpose fit the goals of the Keeping Kids on Track initiative.

Examples of programs of programs that the committee would consider funding include awareness and prevention programs, adult role model/mentor programs, or after school programs. Local activities funded in the past have included a Children’s Song and Dance workshop, Positive Male Role Model program, "Big Changes, Big Choices", and a community playground. The Ellsworth Area Communities for Children locally represents a statewide approach to solving the problems that children face in Maine by bringing together local community leadership and young people to increase the social assets available to improve educational attainment and achievement. Members of all Communities for Children seek to maintain the 5 promises of America’s Promise: 1) An ongoing relationship with a caring adult, 2) safe place, 3) healthy start, 4) marketable skills, and 5) opportunities to give back through community service through programs and local initiatives. For additional information on this Maine initiative, log on to www.state.me.us/cfc or our local Ellsworth Area Communities for Children website at www.downeasthealth.org.
