Workshop on Mold Identification and Prevention

Monday, September 9, 2002

Mold contamination in buildings is an issue that is increasingly gaining attention across the United States. Insurance companies are suddenly facing a more claims due to mold contamination, the Environmental Protection Agency is under pressure to create national indoor air quality standards for mold levels and some states are attempting to enact mold-related legislation on their own. If not caught early enough, mold contamination in buildings can lead to legal quandaries, serious financial loss, and deteriorated health. While homes, schools or businesses are not easy to remediate once infected with mold, mold prevention can be quite simple.

On Monday September 9, 2002, the Hancock County Planning Commission is hosting a workshop that will focus on mold identification and mold prevention. The discussion is open to the general public and will be held from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. (feel free to bring along your lunch) in the Ellsworth City Hall upstairs conference room.

There is no fee to attend this event. This workshop is expected to be useful for real estate agents, building maintenance workers, building contractors, health officers and homeowners. Code enforcement officers and licensed plumbing inspectors attending this workshop will receive two re-certification credits in the area of Building Standards from the State Planning Office.

Panel participants include:

Carl Rella: Attorney familiar with mold-related legal issues and state standards

Gary Bates: Industrial hygienist and member of the Maine Indoor Air Quality Council

Please contact Sherry Churchill (schurchill@hcpcme.org) at the Hancock County Planning Commission (667-7131) to reserve a seat or to request more information.
