PRESS RELEASE
Do you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death and disabilities in Maine? Do you also know that Maine is the “heaviest” State in New England? With this in mind, Healthy Hancock, a coalition for Community Health, invite you to participate in a 6-week countywide physical activity program, 10,000 Steps-a-Day. The goal of this fun-filled exercise program is to increase awareness among Hancock County citizens, young and old, the benefits of becoming physically active and that physical activity can be fun and as simple as putting one foot in front of the other.
Several studies have shown significant health benefits of achieving 10,000 steps a day. These health benefits include; weight loss, weight management, reduction in the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes, pain management of arthritis, counteraction of anger, depression and anxiety, etc.
10,000 Steps-a-Day begins January 5, 2004 and runs through February 15, 2004. Those completing the 6- week challenge will be eligible for prizes.
Pedometers make great stocking stuffers or holiday presents. You can purchase an inexpensive pedometer at any of the local department and athletic stores. If one of your New Year’s Resolutions is to increase your physical activity, 10,000 Steps-a-Day is a great way to get you going and keep moving toward your goal.
